Reposted from our January 2021 newsletter.

Our day-sail and photoshoot last July resulted in a very nice article in Boating New Zealand December edition by Alex Stone with superb photos by Leslie.

Since then progress has been steady on fitting out the interior, so she is now quite liveable. Lance Crosland (Tui Plumbing & Gas) has voluntarily done the plumbing, and Tom Clooney (Waiheke Shades & Covers) made 3 canvas bunks for the cost of materials. Waiheke Rotary donated $500 towards safety equipment, and Rosemary Gibbons made a sail cover for the mainsail.

It’s time for the annual haul-out, water-blast, antifoul, and exterior maintenance. This is planned for 2nd January, for about 10 days. As usual, the Boating Club has given us free hardstand, their support is much appreciated. If anyone would like to help with various jobs, Contact Bernard on 027 228 1334, or just turn up. Then we can go sailing!

Picnic regatta, Wednesday 13th January.
There are so many Waihekeans who have contributed to getting the Kate sailing again, and limited space on board to take everyone for a sail, so the plan is for anyone who has a boat to bring friends and meet on the lee side of Motuihe, about 11 am. Then we can swap crews as appropriate for a sail on the Kate, and come ashore for BYO lunch to share about midday. Perhaps then another crew change for the sail home.If you would like to sail but don’t have a boat, contact Bernard, there will be spaces available.

Day sail, Wednesday 20th January.
This will be from 10 am to 4 pm to work the tides, with a stop at Motuihe for lunch.

Mahurangi Regatta, Friday 29th January – Sunday 31st.
Our first overnight cruisethis is the place to be for all traditional craft, a spectacular event. There are limited spaces available for this adventure, please contact Bernard if you’d like to come.

As the “Kate” sits on her mooring in the Causeway inlet, fully rigged with topmast and bowsprit, everyone who has contributed can take quiet pride in helping preserve a valuable part of our heritage. The trustees and committee thank you all sincerely.
